Loftleidir Icelandic is a big name in aviation. The airline was founded in March 1944. During the 1960s and 1970s Loftleidir operated lowfare services from Luxembourg and because many college students traveled with Loftleidir became known as 'The Hippie Airline'. In 1973, when the world economy worsened, Loftleidir and another Icelandic airline, Flugfelag Islands, merged to form Icelandair. In 2003 the name Loftleider re-emerged as the wet lease and charter arm of Icelandair. Sometimes Loftleidir Icelandic aircraft are carrying out flights on Icelandair services. The Boeing 757 on the photograph is doing this on Icelandair's Amsterdam-Reykjavik service.
