Embraer ERJ-140 / ERJ-135 / ERJ-140
The Embraer ERJ-145 is a 50-seat regional airliner which became a tremendous sales success for the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer.
The ERJ-145 was originally intended as a stretched jet version of the EMB-120 Brasilia turboprop. On the drawing boards it originally had a straight wing and the two turbofan engines mounted forward and over the wing, in the same position as the turboprop engines of the Brasilia. However, because the design didn't reach the intended performances, Embraer had to drop the idea of maximum commonality with the Brasilia. Embraer tried again with a swept wing and engines under the wing, but in the end adopted a configuration with T-tail and engines at the rear of the fuselage. This fuselage retained the Brasilia's cabin configuration of three-abreast seating.
The Embraer ERJ-145 made its maiden flight on August 11 1995 and in December 1996 Continental Express became the first operator of the type. Embraer developed versions with Extended Range (ER), Longer Range (LR) and Extra Long Range (XR). There are also several versions with different take-off weights.
The ERJ-145 has sold in large numbers to US regional airlines like American Eagle, Continental Express (Expressjet) and Chautauqua Airlines. In 2004 a second production line was opened in Harbin in China.
The Embraer ERJ-135 and ERJ-140 are shortened versions of the ERJ-145, seating 37 and 44 passengers respectively. The ERJ-135 flew for the first time on July 4 1998 and the ERJ-140 on June 27 2000. The Legacy is a corporate version of the ERJ-135. Embraer also developed some military variants.
A total of more than 900 aircraft has been sold, mostly ERJ-145s. Embraer sold 108 ERJ-135s. Of the ERJ-140 only 74 were built for two airlines: American Eagle (59) and Chautauqau (15). Production in Brasil has come to an almost stand-still, but the type is still being built in Harbin for the Chinese market. Most regional airlines are now looking for larger aircraft, like the Embraer E-170 and its sister aircraft.
